Friday Night Lights: Louisiana Style

Parkview vs Dutchtown

 

Friday night we were able to catch our second high school game of the season, and thought it would be appropriate to check out the action under Friday night lights in Louisiana. Texas isn’t the only state with a claim to high school football. This matchup would bring us to Geismar, Louisiana about thirty minutes south of Baton Rouge to witness undefeated Dutchtown High School versus Parkview Baptist.

 

 

Though Dutchtown was the host, we settled into some rail spots on the visitor side to support the Parkview squad. Mandi, our Louisiana guide for the weekend, has an uncle that is the head coach of the Parkview squad. So we appropriately shifted our allegiances to the visitor for this game.

 

 

Unfortunately, our efforts couldn’t power the Eagles over the Griffins on this night. It was a hard fought and close game for all four quarters. With a few minutes remaining Dutchtown was clinging to a seven point lead when Parkview blocked a punt deep in Griffin territory and threatened to tie it up. With five ticks left on the clock Parkview had a final shot at the endzone to tie the game, but the fade pass flew out the back of the endzone and Dutchtown held on for the win.

Friday Night Lights: Southlake Style

It goes without saying that football is a religion in Texas, and high school football is the emblematic icon of that faith. Across all corners of the state, the world stops on Friday Night as communities gather under the vaporous glow of beckoning light towers piercing coal night skies above the stretching Texas plains.



Reaching for a venue that embodies the best of Texas football, our feature high school game for 2010 was the fabled Southlake Carroll Dragons.



Southlake, for those of you unfamiliar, is one of the most storied high school football programs in Texas, and therefore the country. The Dragons boast seven Texas State 5A Championships and from 2002-2006 compiled a record of 79-1 including three consecutive state titles from 04’-06. Gregg McElroy, Chase Daniel and Scott Chandler were just a handful of recent graduates whos names may sound familiar.



Despite occupying the outskirts of DFW airport, Southlake is one of the wealthiest suburbs in Texas, and features some of the gaudier McMansions ever to sport a replica medieval entryway. Lets just say the fanbase at Southlake is a bit of a different demographic than you may be familiar with. Bleach blond trophy wives toting their True Religion clad pre-teens around the bleachers are the norm inside the 11,000 seat, $15 Million dollar concrete Dragon Stadium behemoth. The entire atmosphere is unapologetically competitive and elite. That said, it’s an environment that breeds exceptional athletes and scholars, so they are certainly doing something right.




On the field, the game had all the action and regalia we have come to expect from big time High School football. Full bands were in attendance, each putting on impressive half time shows including a rendition of “On Wiscsonin” aka The Southlake Carroll school song (many Texas High school songs are borrowed from Big 10 Schools). The speed of play was impressive for a high school game, and despite a handful of turnovers, execution was remarkable for a bunch of 16-18 year olds.


In the end, Southlake overcame a 10 point 4th quarter deficit to stretch the game into overtime, where they promptly stuffed in a 17 yard run and held on for the win.

Friday Night Lights

After a quick 6 hour jaunt through the gently rolling backroads ofWest Texas, we made our final advance to the beckoning Friday night lights of Ratliff stadium in Odessa. Approaching the stadium from a distance, you can see the lights from over five miles away towering above the expansive flat of the Texas plains.We were there, of course, for the crosstown rivalry of Permian vs.Odessa high schools made famous in the bestselling book and movie “Friday Night Lights”.

On the surface, the game we were about to witness was no different than thousands of others being played all over the country.But for some reason, here, it just feels different.There is something about the influence of Friday night football in Texasthat embeds it into the very fabric of culture. Ratliff Stadium feels like ground zero.

The stadium itself lives up to its reputation.Every seat in the 20,000 capacity house was sold out, and we were glad to have purchased tickets in advance over the phone a week earlier.Between the opposing sides of black and red fans, two full bands, cheerleaders, bell ringing, spirit squads, press box, and jumbotron (with instant replay) the environment more closely resembled a collegiate atmosphere than any high school game I had ever been to.This was certainly a far cry from the meager hundreds of fans that my high school drew on the best of days.Still, the passion and emotion that high school players live and breathe with their teams was gratifyingly evident

Despite being mismatched from the start by the visibly larger and more athletic Odessa squad, the Panthers were further hamstrung by continually finding new and creative ways to shoot themselves in the foot during the game.By the end of the night the Permian QB had fumbled and thrown 4 interceptions, not to mention a flurry of other sloppy errors by the Permian squad.All told, the game should not have been as close as it was.The experience, however, was unforgettable.
